CHEST

Chest

  • Second half of 15th century
  • Grained oak* and wrought iron

This chest with its rounded top features flame-like and flower patterns on the four finely sculpted front panels. The patterns were common in the Flamboyant Gothic style that was developing in 15th century France.

*The grain (French « maille ») is the pattern in the wood radiating outwards from the core of the tree. When the oak grain is sawn, it is cut through the centre, producing planks that are much appreciated for their stability and durability.
